Ibteda‍‍`i teachers continue their protest, vow to stay until demands are met

Ibteda‍‍`i teachers from independent madrasas are still on the streets today, continuing their sit-in protest with a clear message: they won’t leave until their demands are addressed.

The protest began this morning in the TSC area of Dhaka University, where teachers gathered to stand up for their rights.

These teachers are voicing their frustration over the fact that, despite following the same regulations as primary schools, none of the independent madrasas have been nationalized.

They represent 75,000 teachers working in 15,000 madrasas, who are struggling to live decent lives. The teachers have made it clear that they won‍‍`t back down and will stay on the streets until their voices are heard.

They also strongly condemned the police’s actions against them.

Just yesterday, on Sunday, a group of Ibteda‍‍`i teachers faced a police blockade while heading to the residence of the chief adviser.

The police used water cannons, sound grenades, and tear gas to break up the protest, leaving several teachers injured and receiving treatment in the hospital.

The teachers have laid out six demands, which include:

  1. Lifting the 2008 ban on registering independent Ibteda‍‍`i madrasas,
  2. Registering madrasas without codes by assigning them registration numbers,
  3. Creating separate policies for independent Ibteda‍‍`i madrasas,
  4. Approving teaching permits, salaries, and the 2025 policy for these madrasas,
  5. Providing office assistants, like in primary schools, and
  6. Allowing the introduction of pre-primary classes in independent Ibteda‍‍`i madrasas.

The teachers are determined to continue their struggle until they see changes.
